My braces are being removed in two weeks. i just wondered what a retainer is like?

i had an impression taken yesterday, but only of my upper jaw, what about the bottom teeth? and what is a retainer like to wear?

Depends on the type of retainer.
There are hawley retainers, essix (clear plastic) and permanent (just a wire bonded to the back of the teeth).I've had both hawley and essix and both are comfortable.
Hawleys can be adjusted by tweaking the wire in case your teeth move and you need some correction. Its not as easy with an essix.At first you will talk with a lisp but the more you talk with them in the easier it will become. Remember to take your retainer case with you at all times so when you have to take them out to eat they will be in a safe place.You'll get use to them. Wear them religiously.

OUCH! I hated mine! My upper and lower were both made of plastic! So I would bite down on it (playing with it) and broke a ton of them!

It depends on the type of retainer, but the upper retainers that I've had are a plastic plate that sticks to the roof of your mouth and holds the wires in place. It's not uncomfortable if it's fitted and adjusted properly, but it can make you salivate more than usual and speak with a lisp until you get used to it.

Well, I had gotten my braces off about half a year ago, and retainers aren't that bad. At first they will make you gag, but that feeling will go away after a few days of wearing them. Also, at first, my dentist had wanted me to wear them all the time. I didn't do that, because with them on, I had a huge noticeable slur in my speech, which made it really annoying for classes. All retainers are is a piece of plastic that is on the inside of the mouth, and a metal wire going across the teeth.Now, I only have to wear at night, and they aren't even bad. Just put them on, and forget about it.Some tips:
CLEAN THEM! Or else they will SMELL!
Put a sticker on the case that says your phone number, incase it gets lost.
Don't lose them! They can cost more than $400!
